BAKER, W[illiam] W. Memoirs of Service with John Yates Beall, C.S.N. by W.W. Baker, of Chesterfield. Edited with an Introduction by Douglas Southall Freeman. Richmond: The Richmond Press, 1910. 1st ed. 69pp. Portrait frontis. Orig. cloth. Minor rubbing to spine ends and corners, insect damage to top margin, not affecting text, else very good. Scarce. Haynes I, 942. Presentation inscription from the author on front pastedown, "To My Esteemed Friend Hon. Julien Gunn, W.W. Baker." Baker's reminiscences first appeared in the Richmond Time-Dispatch, then edited by Douglas Southall Freeman. Beall and his men composed a group of Confederate naval irregulars. They operated in the Chesapeake area at sea in much the same way that Mosby operated in the Valley. Beall and Baker eventually made their way to Canada and mounted a raid in Lake Erie to free the Confederate prisoners on Johnson's Island. Beall was eventually captured and hanged by Federal authorities.
