Charleston, SCA: Walker, Evans & Cogswell, Printers, 1881, 1st ed. 138pp. Frontis. Later calf-backed cloth, marbled endpapers, original printed wrappers bound in. Small stains to frontis., wrappers lightly chipped, else very good. Dornbusch II, 919. Very scarce. Presentation inscription on front wrapper, "A.S. Salley, Jr., Charleston, S.C., October 25, 1899. Presented by the author." With an note in the author's hand on frontis. A.S. Salley, Jr., was a noted historian and collector of material on the Civil War. "Noted for its accuracy, this study passed under te scrutiny of several of the regiment's members before it was published" Nevins I, p.173. "The material for the 'sketch' was roughly gathered by the writer immediately on his return home after the war, while the events were fresh in his memory. This was carefully compared with a similar work prepared by our esteemed commander, General A.M. Manigualt, and with a private correspondence of the writer narrating the events as they occurred, to the lady who is now his wife"--Preface. Laid in is a postcard with a photographic portrait of General Walker.
