(MISSOURI). Constitution of the State of Missouri. November 16, 1820. Read, and Referred to a Select Committee. Washington: Printed by Gales & Seaton, 1820. 1st ed. 25pp. Orig. printed wrapper in custom red morocco-backed marbled board folder. Light chipping to front wrapper, faint scattered foxing, else very good or better copy. This constitution is a direct result of the Missouri Compromise of the same year which gave Missouri the right to form a state constitution permitting slavery. The constitution went even further, however, and banned free Negroes. This restriction had to be struck out before Missouri was admitted as a state the following year.
