A scarce and classic work on frontier life, with special importance for those fields in which the author had personal experience, including commerce, the cattle trade, mining, the Indian wars (in particular the Sioux wars), and exploration. Stuart went overland to California in 1852, and later settled as a rancher in Montana. He gives a full account of the early years of the Montana territory, describes his own experience in the Indian wars of the Northwest, and devotes a chapter to cattle rustlers and vigilantes.
