An early advocate of a steam-powered navy, he later served as Senator from New Jersey. With account of Stockton's role in the War of 1812, the war with Algiers, dealing with the pirates of the West Indies, "Of particular interest in this work is the account of Commodore Stockton's overland journey on his return to the States after the conquest of California" Wagner-Camp.
