[SMITH, William]. Relation Historique de L'Expedition contre les Indiens de L'Ohio en MDCCLXIV. Commandee par le Chevalier Henry Bouquet ... Amsterdam: Marc-Michel Rey, 1769. 1st French ed. 147, (10) pp. 2 full-plate copperplate illus., 4 folding maps and plans. Contemporary 1/4-calf and paper-covered boards with gilt lettered morocco spine label. A clean, closed tear to one folding map, else a fine copy. HOWES S-693. "Originally ascribed to Thomas Hutchins, who accompanied this expedition and executed the 2 plans; but that the book was prepared by Smith, from Bouquet's notes, has been established. This campaign gave Pontiac's conspiracy its death-blow" Howes. "The introduction described Bouquet's successful expedition of 1763, to relieve Fort Pitt from the siege of the Shawnees, Delawares, and other Indian tribes. Because of lack of men, he was unable to follow up his victory at Bushy Run, and depredations by the Indians continued. He was despatched by General Gage in 1764, to force them to make treaties of peace, and to release their prisoners, in both aims he was successful" Sabin, 8464.
