Thornton 4023. Describes the experiences of a Craven County resident while in a northern prison camp. John B. Ernul (1843-1918) enlisted at the age of 18 in Co. I, 10th NC Artillery, but he was transferred to an infantry unit. On March 7, 1865, he was wounded in the leg, captured, and imprisoned at Point Lookout. He was released on June 11, returning to New Bern on June 23. After the war, Ernul moved to New Bern, where he was listed as a shingle dealer in the Craven County census of 1880. Thornton indicates this item was printed in New Bern, NC, by Owen Dunn, but the original source for that information is unknown.
