Very old waterstains on front wrapper, spine partially abraded,fainst scattred foxing to exterior leaves, rear wrapper starting, else a very good copy. Rare. Not in Dornbusch, Haynes, or Nevins. OCLC locates only 6 copies. Col. Holliday served under Lee as Colonel of the 33rd Virginia Infantry until losing his right arm at Cedar Mountain. He went on to serve in the Confederate State Congress as was elected governor of Virginia in 1877. Daniel Bedinger Lucas joined the staff of Gen. Henry A. Wise when war was declared and participated in the Kanawha Valley campaign. Lucas ran the blockade to defend his friend John Yates Beall who was accused of being a Confederate spy. His defense was unsuccessful and Beall was executed. Lucas was barred from practicing law until 1871, and turned to literature, publishing several volumes of poetry and became known as "the poet of the Shenadoah Valley." He also wrote one of the definitive works on Beall, The Memoir of John Yates Beall, published in Montreal in 1865. Lucas served in the West Virginia state legislature and as a member of the Supreme Court of Appeals from 1869 to 1893.
