Item #51128

HOLLIDAY, Carl. A History of Southern Literature. New York: The Neale Publishing Company, 1906. 1st ed. 406 pp. Orig. cloth, T.E.G. Krick 224. A near fine copy. "Holliday's history is organized under six chronological headings, one of them being the period of the Civil War. It is his premise that the writings of Southern authors 'are not merely disconnected efforts of isolated thinkers, but, rather, the natural, logical, and continuous productions of a people differing so materially in views and sentiments' from the North that a Civil War was necessary to prevent their becoming separate countries. The New York Times view of this was, of course, to declare the author to be 'quite without authority and almost equally lacking in insight.'" Krick. A near fine copy.
