The first Southern appearance of this English work, preceded by a sketch of Swain's life, dated 1819 from Charleston, on page iv. This is the more interesting of the two early American editions [the other from Philadelphia in 1811], because its four-page list of subscribers at the end is a virtual Who's Who of the Charleston female elite: Grimkes, Pinckneys, Hugers, Porchers, Rutledges, and a couple of hundred others bought one.
