MacPHAIL, BENJAMIN SMITH BARTON AND WILLIAM PAUL CRILLON BARTON 26.The fourth American edition, revised, of the first basic botany written by an American, first published in 1803. Although the title calls for forty plates, plate number thirty-seven was omitted from all copies, and thus thirty-nine plates comprise a complete copy. Barton was a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, later professor of natural history at the University of Pennsylvania, and an author with a wide range of interests. An important American botanical work.
