Legare (1797-1843) was a southern lawyer and intellectual who opposed the attempts of South Carolina's radicals to nullify the Tariff of 1832. He served as attorney general of South Carolina from 1830 to 1832, opposing John Calhoun's theory of state sovereignty and right to secession. He became U.S. charge d'affaires in Belgium in 1832, was U.S. attorney general under President John Tyler in 1841, and replaced Daniel Webster as Secretary of State for a month before his death in 1843. This edition of his writings was edited by his sister and begins with an extended biographical notice.
