Item #47169

(RAILROADS). The Pennsylvania Railroad. Address of the Committee of Seven to the Citizens of Philadelphia, and of Pennsylvania.... [Philadelphia?]: Jesper Harding, 1846. 38pp. Original printed brown wrappers. A few light fox marks. Near fine. SABIN 60358 (note). A significant early Pennsylvania railroad item, arguing the case for a railroad from Philadelphia, through Pittsburgh, and out to the "Great West." Pennsylvania's strategic position on the East Coast is emphasized, as are the many financial rewards that would come to the state if it had a railroad dominating business with the West. Pittsburgh, "the American Birmingham" would provide the necessary iron and coal for the effort. This address was made at a meeting of the citizens of Philadelphia on April 28, 1846, and the state legislature had passed the bill incorporating the railroad just a few weeks earlier.
