Barbe-Marbois (1745-1837) had been involved with American politics from the start, serving as secretary for the French legation in 1779, and was the lead negotiator for the French in the Louisiana Purchase. Several years later, he wrote this account of the process. An English translation appeared in Philadelphia the next year.
