Item #44856

PENN, William. Truth Exalted in a Short, But Sure, Testimony Against All Those Religions, Faiths, And Worships That Been Formed and Followed in the Darkness of Apostacy,--- And for That Glorious Light Which is Now Risen, And Shines Forth in the Life and Doctrine of the Despised Quakers.... London, 1671. 20pp. 12mo. Modern marbled boards. Titlepage lightly tanned, last two leaves with professional marginal repairs. Very good. Bronner & Fraser, William Penn's Published Writings 2C. Wing P1390. Smith 2:283:1. Whiting 115:9. Third edition, after the first London printing of 1668, of Penn's first defense of Quakerism. This edition includes the first appearance of the "Cautionary Postscript," which warns that time is running out on the souls of misguided Catholics and Protestants. "The passion of a new convert is clearly evident in this short pamphlet in which WP denounced the wickedness and errors of Catholics and Protestants alike and declared that Quakers alone hold the key to 'Life and Salvation.' Not yet caught up in the pamphlet war that Friends waged against their enemies, WP apparently issued this blast against all other Christians out of sheer exuberance during his first months as a Quaker" - Bonner & Fraser. Scarce.
