Brackenridge (1786-1871), a judge and politician, left St. Charles, Missouri, in the spring of 1811, in the company of the fur trader Manuel Lisa (1772-1820). His journal describes his trip up the Missouri and also gives an account of the overland trek of the Stuart-Crooks party from Oregon to St. Louis in 1812. The first section of the text describes the whole new territory of Louisiana, its history, existing settlements, natural history, Native American tribes, and natural resources.
