Peter Jay was the eldest son of John Jay, Signatory for the Treaty of Paris and the Chief Justice of New York who signed the Gradual Emancipation Act of 1799 for the state. Peter A. Jay worked as a private secretary to his father in London during the Jay Treaty and later became a federalist member to the New York State Assembly from 1815 until 1816. This book was compiled by Peter's great-grandson, also named John Jay.
