STOBO, Major Robert. Memoirs of...the Virginia Regiment. Pittsburgh, 1854. 12mo. Folding map. 92pp. A very good copy in orig. cloth. Howes 1015. Sabin 91869. Major Stobo was the engineer who laid out Fort Necessity at Great Meadows for Washington, and was one of the hostages surrendered to the French when that uncompleted fortification capitulated on July 3, 1754. He was imprisoned within Fort Duquesne and made an accurate scale drawing of the fort which was smuggled out to Washington. Stobo was later imprisoned at Quebec. (Cf. Robinson pp. 43-44, under Neville B. Craig, who wrote the introduction to this book.) Howes notes that this edition differs from the 1800 London edition.
