The "German Sectarians" is one of 350 signed and numbered sets, and contains the prospectus for the set in the first volume. Sachse (1842-1919) was a historian of Pennsylvania German culture and these two works continue to be cited and built upon by twenty-first century scholars. The "German Pietists" is illustrated with plates Sachse took himself; as editor of an early photography journal, he was also a self-conscious historian of the development of photography in Philadelphia.
