Equality.
Item #12519
BELLAMY, Edward. Equality. Original cloth. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1897. First edition. BAL 967. Locke, p.31. Sargent, p.111. The sequel to Bellamy's 1888 novel Looking Backward: 2000-1887 (Grolier 100 American 90). That book is the most famous American Utopian novel, inspiring the Nationalist movement, which sought a governmental ownership of production and distribution brought about by peaceful means. Bellamy notes in his preface to Equality: "Looking Backward was a small book, and I was not able to get into it all I wished to say on the subject. Since it was published what was left out of it has loomed up as so much more important than what it contained that I have been constrained to write another book. I have taken the date of Looking Backward, the year 2000, as that of Equality, and have utilized the framework of the former story as a starting point for this which I now offer." This book continues with the same characters of Julian West, Dr. Leete, and his daughter Edith. So eagerly anticipated was Equality that The New York Times reported on 3 July 1897 that the publisher sold out of the book in 36 hours. A fine copy.
